Gould lab - Neurobiology of mood & anxiety disorders

Department of Psychiatry - University of Maryland School of Medicine

Our laboratory investigates the pathophysiology of mood disorders and the mechanisms of action of mood stabilizers and antidepressants using genetic, pharmacological, and behavioral methods. The research has a particular focus on the development of improved animal models for applications to psychiatry, the functional consequences of mood disorder susceptibility genes, and collaborative translational studies with clinically focused research groups.

We aim to further understand the underlying causes of mood disorders as well as assess the feasibility of novel treatment strategies. We anticipate that an improved understanding of the underlying biology of mood disorders may lead to earlier interventions and new treatments that will benefit those suffering from these diseases.
